In his Third Symphony, Gustav Mahler goes in search of meaning and grounding. As usual with anguished Romantic composers, Mahler primarily finds them in nature. In his Symphony no. 3 he writes 'what the flowers of the field’ and ‘what the animals of the forest’ tell him on his music paper. He seems to want to capture the creation of the world in sound. In the symphony’s six movements, primal forces, flora, fauna, humans, angels and love are handled successively. Music with an almost metaphysical scope.
