Handel and Bach tempted by pleasure
In Handel’s The Choice of Hercules the young demigod is faced with a frustrating dilemma: should he follow a path of Virtue or take the more tempting path of Pleasure? Bach also wrestles with the stresses of moral choice when god of nature Pan challenges sun god Apollo to a symbolic musical duel between chaos and order.
