54 staves - one for each voice – crowd together in the score of the Missa Salisburgensis. This musical monument, by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, resounded through Salzburg Cathedral in 1662. It was an unprecedented spectacle, produced for the greater glory and the honour of the archbishopric. Even by today’s standards, this Mass is tremendously theatrical. Its six vocal and instrumental choirs, jubilant trumpets and timpani, come together in an immense polyphonic weave. Architecture and acoustics are vitally important to this music. It wasn’t by chance that Biber found inspiration in the multi-choral works Monteverdi composed especially for Venice’s St. Mark's Basilica. The renowned Czech ensemble Collegium 1704 combine the Missa Salisburgensis with a selection from Monteverdi's Selva morale e spirituale. No corner of the Concert Hall will remain unutilised.
