‘Hallelujah! No music can be too magnificent for the joy of the Lord,’ thought Handel, and he composed an oratorio that went straight into history. In his day, the ladies of the audience were asked not to attend a performance in hoop skirts, so that as many listeners as possible could enter the hall. The music was so overwhelming that the work was quickly generally given a well-deserved definite article: The Messiah. For us here in Bruges, Collegium 1704 let this compelling masterpiece once again soar.
George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
