Bach liked to give his best music a second life by rearranging such ‘hits’ for a new occasion. That is how his magnificent Mass in B minor came into being, as a gift for August III of Saxony. Complex learned polyphony, imposing choirs and moving arias from Bach's lengthy career combined to form a compelling whole.
