To close this Bach Academy in Bruges, the Bach family will of course have the last word: Philippe Herreweghe and his Collegium Vocale Ghent round off the weekend festival with two moving chorale cantatas, including the classic Easter work Christ lag in Todesbanden. The cherry on the cake is Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, based on a chorale originally by Martin Luther. In Wilhelm’s Friedemann’s later version, now including trumpets and tympani, this utterly Lutheran work has an especially jubilant tone.
