With his Mass in B minor, Bach made an astounding contribution to the oldest genre of church music: the Latin Mass. For fifteen years this composition was a work-in-progress. What started off in 1733 as a Missa brevis - limited to a Kyrie and Gloria – gradually developed into a Missa solemnis for five-part choir, vocal soloists and large orchestra. For this, the Thomas Cantor browsed extensively through his catalogue of spiritual and secular cantatas, smuggling the most beautiful of them into this high mass. It reads like a cross section of Bach's impressive oeuvre. His Mass in B minor is a cathedral built on indestructible foundations. Sometimes it’s redolent of the old counterpoint of Palestrina, at other times of the expressive richness and vitality of the Baroque. Collegium Vocale Gent return to this pinnacle of musical and emotional depth.
