A colourful and catchy homage to a great Russian composer

DeFilharmonie present a double homage to Tchaikovsky. None other of Tchaikovsky's works boasts as much local colour as his ‘Little Russian’ Symphony, in which he included a generous dose of Ukrainian folk music. Tchaikovsky expresses his respect for the European tradition by taking Beethoven's famous Eroica Symphony as his inspiration. The groundbreaking harmonic twists he introduces in the finale show him to be a true trendsetter. Tchaikovsky also led the way with his effervescent, uniquely orchestrated music for The Nutcracker ballet. Within the straitjacket imposed by the choreographer, he managed to create compelling, spontaneous music that still sounds every bit as catchy in the 21st century.
