Dazzlingly beautiful and filmed in an overwhelming chiaroscuro, but nevertheless pitch-black. In Detour, club pianist Al Roberts hitchhikes from New York to California to meet up with his girlfriend and along the way gets caught up in a real nightmare. Cult film Detour is a road movie, a flight towards the promised land, but also a journey deep into the souls of the protagonists. As they head towards the setting sun, the camera delves deeper and deeper into the dreams, memories and soul of antihero Tom Neal and femme fatale Ann Savage.
