Centuries-old African ritual trance music
Night is falling. To the rhythm of repeatedly clapping hands and the deep sound of the guembri (bass lute), the maalem (master musician) leads an entrancing ceremony. The call-and-response of the African Gnawa’s continuous chanting evokes a trance or a healing catharsis, also in the audience.
