The motto Semper Dowland, semper Dolens (always Dowland, always doleful) sums up much of Dowland’s music. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Melancholia was not seen as a mental illness, but instead as an essential and sublime source of inspiration. Dowland's famous lute song Flow my tears, which lay at the basis of Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares, is one of the most famous manifestations of this. In this course, Professor Guido Latré takes you to Dowland’s England and sketches the society and the zeitgeist in which Dowland lived and worked. Afterwards, musician and music theorist Jan Devlieger thoroughly prepares you for the evening concert.
This course is taught in Dutch.
