In this thoroughly German programme, the energetic Jonathan Nott leads his musicians along both strange and familiar paths. As recognisable as the adventures of Strauss's hero sound, so appealingly unusual is the sound of Lachenmann's contrary political commentary on German nationalist tendencies. In his dance suite he refers to the ‘über Alles’ from the German national anthem. And who better to lead us into this unknown territory than the up-and-coming talent of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie?
Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
Ein Heldenleben, opus 40
Helmut Lachenmann (1935)
