According to the ancient Greeks, the universe consisted of four elements: earth, air, fire and water. Aristotle added a fifth element, aether, a noble element for the region beyond the terrestrial sphere. Enlightenment composers were happy to work with these elements, but equally happy to work with the contrasting chaos. Les Muffatti let fly in wild Baroque, such as Rebel's iconic Cahos and the exciting storm scene from Marais' Alcione. Brilliant harpsichordist Bertrand Cuiller just manages to keep hold of the reins.
