Pianist Frederik Croene (1973) performs on stage as a virtuoso interpreter-improviser on the organ and (deconstructed) piano. With his unconventional approach to the piano, he wants to prove that traditions are best cherished by thoroughly manipulating them. In recent years, Croene has slowly but surely been evolving from a performing into a composing musician. In this move from intuitive, instantaneous improvisations to written work, he has been increasingly inspired by themes and stories from outside of music. The ecological crisis and his fascination for the work of poetess Dominique De Groen provide the basis for a piano recital with video art by Karl Van Welden (Solastalgia) and for a song cycle for three singers and a small ensemble (Counterforces, Amos, Lore & IKRAAAN). Croene is thus proving himself to be increasingly versatile: as a performing musician of scores and improvisations, as a composer – also for others – and as a maker of staged projects.
