Midway through Sunday at the Bach Academy we find the Masques ensemble conducted by Olivier Fortin. They are presenting three orchestral suites by Bach, with an unusual chamber ensemble. Two of them are definitely by Bach senior, and the third is probably by his son Wilhelm Friedemann, himself a brilliant keyboard player. Here, the smallest possible number of instruments brings out all the refinement of the Bachs’ music. Especially when played by Masques, which is considered in Bruges and more widely to be one of today’s best chamber music ensembles.
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
