Einstein on the beach
- the original title was Einstein on the Beach in Wall Street, inspired by a photo of Albert Einstein on the beach and Nevil Shute’s book On the Beach
- Glass was as good as unknown when he started Einstein
- Glass is one of the figureheads of minimal music, a type of music in which the composer allows limited basic material to evolve very gradually in long-drawn-out repetitions
- Glass produced Einstein on the Beach himself and after touring he had to work as a taxi driver to pay the expenses
Five new masterpieces in 2018-2019
In season 18-19 the Concertgebouw presents five new Masterpieces: five highpoints of music history that you have to hear live at least once in your lifetime. Plus a comprehensive programme of participatory projects (in collaboration with Musica) and in-depth context activities.
