In his Turangalîla Symphony Olivier Messiaen brings together a rich palette of influences: the myth of Tristan and Isolde and the accompanying references to Wagner, rhythmic elements from Indian music, the unearthly electronic sounds of the ondes Martenot, Asian coloured percussion and a massive orchestra. Maarten Beirens guides us through this dramatic and imposing orchestral work, which Messiaen described with a strong sense of understatement as ‘a love song’.
