How universal is the image of mother and child? In European culture, Mary, mother of Jesus, is iconic as the ‘Madonna’ – which means 'My Lady'. As ‘Our Lady’ she is the embodiment of unconditional love, a love that touches us all. Don’t we all feel joy when a child is born, or sorrow when a child is lost? Music translates these profound inherent emotions into works such as the Magnificat and the Stabat Mater: the mother full of hope and joy and the mother who is suffering. Musicologist Liesbet Vereertbrugghen recounts how the mother figure has been expressed through the ages.
