‘The requiem is as gentle as I am,’ said Fauré about his rather atypical Mass for the Dead. No monumental visions of a terrifying end, but instead a modest farewell to life, a happy and peaceful passing. Bruckner's motets evidence the same serenity. Stravinsky's ritualistic Symphony of Psalms for choir and orchestra provides a moving contrast. Philippe Herreweghe is happy to invite us along on this blissful journey back in time.
