The Orchestre National de Lille glitter for us thrice in C major. Firstly, with an overture by Beethoven, who like a modern Prometheus, stole the musical fire of the gods. Secondly, with Haydn's Cello Concerto, a prime example of formal clarity, ideally suited to the nimble fingers of Jean-Guihen Queyras. These two gems are set alongside the First Symphony of the still very young (17!) Georges Bizet. Bizet’s youthfulness rings out in this fresh, elegant, light-hearted work: a preview of his future genius.
