Pergolesi's Stabat Mater must have been a hit from the outset, because just a few years after its composition a copy already arrived in Leipzig, Deeply impressed, Bach couldn’t stop himself: he carefully replaced the Latin text with a German version of the Miserere and - with a few crucial adjustments - stuck it on top of the Italian original.
