It was with the support of his close friend Felix Mendelssohn that Robert Schumann completed his Symphony nr.2 shortly after recovering from a nervous breakdown. The symphony symbolises both the pain and the victory over his illness and counts as the capstone of the healing process. This heroic and sumptuous symphony is set alongside Mendelssohn's enduringly popular Violin Concerto in E minor. In order to forge a unified musical whole, Mendelssohn allows its three movements to flow into each other without interruption.
Due to subsidy cuts, the Sinfonieorchester Basel was forced to cancel its concerts. With Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen we fortunately found a worthy substitute.
