Sound installations are too arty farty? Not at all! Musician and film producer Jochem Baelus (ex Echo Beatty) proves the contrary with Slumberland. Hair dryers with harmonicas, reshaped knitting tools, super 8 projectors and an assemblage of drums and sewing machines are his go-to instruments. Think Suicide versus Swans.

Early 2013, the LP Slumberland by Slumberland was released on the small record label De Zesde Kolonne, hardly one year later, he was taken on as supporting programme for Tindersticks, King Dude and Parquet Courts. Early this year, one of his tracks was included in a compilation of Dymaxion Groove Records, where it featured in the good company of Dan Deacon, Silver Apples and Jad Fair. Since recently, Baelus is supported by two gifted percussionists: Frederik Meulyzer (a.o. Hamster Axis of the One-click Panther) and Alfredo Bravo (a.o. Flying Horseman), which elevates the performance to the next summit. Hooray for the peculiar Abyssal voice and the dark, alternative and repetitive sound of Slumberland!
