Three saints, three symbols, three free-spirited women, each of whom had to face heart-breaking choices in her struggle against an oppressive society. Taking independence as his narrative thread, young opera director Vincent Huguet (Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, Opéra Comique) welds together their dramatic lives. The theatrical ‘soundtrack’ is by Charpentier. His histoires sacrées are miniature operas: a canvas for the joy, doubt and suffering of these tormented heroines. His patron Princess Marie de Guise was equally free-spirited: a daughter of upper class revolutionaries who opposed absolutism. Culture lovers, artists and intellectuals mingled in her city palace. Leading Charpentier specialists Sebastien Dauce and his Ensemble Correspondances set out here on their first scenic adventure.
