Founded in 944, St. Donatian’s Church was part of the earliest centre of Bruges. The initial octagonal chapel was expanded into a Romanesque cruciform church with a Gothic nave, before it was demolished in 1799. That history, of which Hubert De Witte knows all the details, inspired conceptual architect Toyo Ito, whose pavilion was a symbol of Bruges, Cultural Capital 2002. Hera Van Sande explains the inspirational importance of this spot and also - besides taking a closer look at St. Donatian (Donaas) - tells us the story of Toyo Ito, with whom she collaborated as a project architect.
