During the performance season, Gustav Mahler completely surrendered himself to a hectic life as a conductor and opera director. But in the summer, during long walks in the mountains, he sought and found the peace and inspiration he needed to compose. On those walks, Mahler was following in the footsteps of other famous romantics, such as Johann Wolfgang van Goethe, Franz Schubert and Caspar David Friedrich. Cultural historian Joris Capenberghs talks about ‘wanderlust’ and takes us on a walk with keen ramblers, such as Gustav Mahler, Jan van Ruusbroec and Henry David Thoreau.
