The young Alexei Lubimov became famous with performances of Stockhausen, Ligeti, Boulez and other contemporary iconoclasts. This was naturally much to the vexation of the Soviet authorities, who started to monitor his every coming and going. In the 1970s, as a temporary solution, Lubimov focussed on older keyboard music, played on period instruments. For three years he barely touched a piano, in order to master all the subtleties of the fortepiano and harpsichord. Since then, he has never been able to play Haydn, Beethoven or Schubert on a modern piano. Anyone who has heard Lubimov conjure a stream of varying colours and textures from period instruments will understand why!
