With a (self-chosen?) name like Gilles Joye, it can’t be otherwise: this composer-singer enjoyed life. But he was also a priest, and so worldly relationships were out of the question. So who is the ‘beautiful rose’ who inspired the melody for the beautiful Missa Rosa bella in the Lucca Choirbook? Is it perhaps a musical confession? Was Joye expressing his deepest feelings? Whatever the case, Thomas Baeté and his ClubMediéval champion this almost forgotten Kortrijk-born composer and John Bedyngham’s O rosa bella, the song he used as his basis.
