From May 29 to June 1, 2024, the Concertgebouw, together with the neighboring Beurs-, Meeting- en Congres Centrum (BMCC), hosted the prestigious EACD conference. More than a thousand specialists working with children with disabilities gathered in Bruges to delve into the latest scientific developments and connect with colleagues in the field. With fascinating keynote presentations, hands-on workshops, and an extensive innovation fair, the event provided four incredibly valuable days for the attendees.
The highlight of the conference was the concert organized by the hosts on the eve of the scientific program, aiming to have a broader social impact.
The concert was the culmination of an intensive preparation period of nearly two years. No less than 350 artists, including many children with disabilities, were guided by conductor Dirk Lievens and his team. Together, they presented a vibrant program of music, dance, spoken word, and drama, accompanied by the JOWEST youth orchestra. It was a moving and unforgettable evening for a fully packed hall that rewarded the performers with an overwhelming standing ovation.

With the captivating opening concert, the tone for the EACD conference – aptly subtitled "Composing A New Symphony" – was immediately set. Under the guidance of KU Leuven professors and conference chairs Elegast Monbaliu and Bernard Dan, participants followed a comprehensive program with optional sessions in the comfortable meeting rooms of both the Concertgebouw and the BMCC. Between the parallel sessions, they reconvened in the foyers of the Concertgebouw for a fresh and flavorful boost from caterer Deldycke. Technical service provider Aventix set up its central hub in the Concertgebouw and coordinated all sessions at both conference locations via a fast satellite connection.
The close proximity of the Concertgebouw and the BMCC and their modern, accessible facilities – also for attendees with disabilities – were important factors for Professor Monbaliu in bringing the EACD conference to Bruges. Reflecting on the event, he expressed his satisfaction:
